Chicago

One of my favorite cities in the USA. Highways become rivers of light and towers that stay awake until morning.

Chicago River, Wacker Drive

Chicago River · Wacker Drive

The city built itself around the water, then forgot the water was there.

Walk the river level and you get a completely different Chicago than the street grid above. The architecture crowds down to the edge, the light bounces off the surface, and you can see the whole building without craning your neck.

Just before sunset, overcast sky. The corncob towers of Marina City on the right, the bridges cutting across the middle distance. Chicago looks better from the river level than almost anywhere else.

Columbus Drive at Night

From an overpass on Columbus Drive late at night. The clouds were moving fast enough to blur across the sky while the skyline stayed sharp. The traffic below turned into long streaks of light.

South Columbus Drive · Grant Park

Looking back at the loop from the highway.

Moved a few blocks south and turned back toward the loop. The towers were lit up, Prudential on the left, Aon Center just right of center.

The highway runs straight into the skyline from this angle. The light trails lead your eye right into the towers.

Wacker & Michigan at Night

Looking down Wacker toward the Wrigley Building at night. Most of the traffic turned into streaks. The ghostly people to the left were taking the cross walk.
